THE PERSECUTION OF PHILIPPINES SENATOR LEILA DE LIMA

Senator Leila de Lima (The Philippines), is one of the most vocal and determined critics of the human rights abuses of the regime of Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte. A female opposition member and former Secretary of Justice, as Chair of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights senator de Lima led an inquiry into alleged mass extrajudicial killings and a spate of summary executions attributed to Duterte’s administration under the onus of his “war on drugs.” In apparent retaliation, she was arrested on February 24, 2017 based on accusations that her senatorial campaign was financed by the drug trade – charges that have been debunked and refuted by numerous esteemed international bodies. She was in unjust detention for 1,000 days on 20 November 2019. Amnesty International has adopted senator De Lima as “prisoner of conscience”, while Human Rights Watch has called her a “political prisoner.” Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad al-Hussein called her “a sample of the real store of moral courage and leadership that exists among us today”.

The “Senator Leila de Lima Cannabis Social Club” in exile (Utrecht, The Netherlands) applauds her courage and compassion with the worlds dehumanized users of consciousness altering substances which she insists should be treated as humans, along with other persecuted minority groups in the Philippines. Sen. Leila de Lima is the victim of a ruthless regime but in her steadfast resistance she is an inspiration for human rights activists the world over and a beacon of hope for all of Duterte’s victims.
