Susana happily accompanying a patient looking for daily relief at the Center.

A not very visible but very important part of the Center’s social work is the auxiliary medical assistance offered to sick or accidented Wixaritari. Often these people have to be transferred with the Center’s Toyota SUV-pickup truck from remote mountain villages to Huejuquilla.

The Center’s house doctor Fernando Montes de Oca will provide free and fast initial medical assistance, but in the absence of ambulance services and since the local hospital only provides the most basic medical treatment, patients in need of specialized treatment have to be transferred again with the Center’s Toyota to hospitals in the capital of the neighbouring state of Zacatecas, 200 kms away, or to the Jalisco state capital city of Guadalajara, a 6 hour 350 km drive. In case a patient must be hospitalized for a longer period of time, the Center will provide financial assistance for meals during the period of her or his convalescence. Then there are people like the gentleman featured in the picture on top of the page, disabled or otherwise unable to work or pay for the special diet the Center’s kitchen can provide them with.
